Mealworms -“Tenebrio molitor”

Mealworms are the larval form of the meal-worm beetle, referred to as “Tenebrio molitor”, a species of darkling beetle.  Like all holometabolic insects, they go through four life stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult.

Mealworms are great economical feeder insects for pet owners owning reptiles.  Reptiles and animals like geckos (leopard, crested, fat tail), bearded dragons, various lizards and baby crocodiles, pet spiders, poultry, pet birds, fish, pigs. They are used as a staple food for many pet owners all around the world.  Mealworms are used typically as a pet food for captive reptiles, fish, and birds. They are fed  to wild birds in bird feeders, particularly during the nesting season.  They are also used as fishing bait across many countries including South Africa.

Mealworms as pet food.

Mealworms are useful due to their high protein content.  Chickens require protein (along with 12 of the 16 elements found in living tissues) in order to molt their feathers, Which makes Mealworms a suitable and tasty component of their diet.  Mealworm larvae contains significant nutrient content. every 100 grams of raw larvae, 206 kilocalories and anywhere from 14 to 25 grams of protein. The larvae contain levels of potassium, copper, sodium, selenium, iron and zinc that rival that of beef.  They contain essential linoleic acids as well.

Mealworms are relatively easy to keep. We recommend always having on hand a dry food source such as wheat bran or oats, a water source like slices of carrot or potato.

They can be  stored in the fridge to slow down pupation. Before feeding the mealworms to your pets, remove the required amount of worms from the fridge, so that they will be at room temperature (at least 30min) before feeding to your pet.
